1K a Day Motivational – “But I Just Don’t Want To”

Fourteenth in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.

Today it’s a familiar subject. We’ve all been there. We’ve all wanted to just say “Screw it. I just don’t want to bother today.” Maybe we don’t have anything specific in mind. Maybe it’s not video games or television or parties or working too hard or being tired or any of the other things I’ve talked about in these Motivational posts. Maybe you’re just sick and tired of anything that isn’t sitting around and goofing the fuck off. Continue reading

1K a Day Challenge – Week Fourteen

It’s April 12th, 2015. Week fourteen of writing 1,000 words per day of fiction.

Most of my writing this past week has been in what are called Sprints, a method that one of my writing cohorts swears by, and it’s hard to argue with her results. The concept of a sprint is to write with abandon for 10 solid minutes, then stop. You take a 10 minute break where you do whatever the hell you want, and then you write for another 10 solid minutes. This continues for as long as you can write on a given day.

Most of the time I write 300 to 400 words in a 10 minute sprint. Because I’m focused in smaller bursts, these words are also focused. Maybe they’re not elegant, but they’re usable. They’re viable. I can make them work for me. Sprints are a great tool if you can adhere to them and protect your 10 minute writes.

Let’s get on with it, eh?

Days 95 through 101 have been successes, with a minimum of 1,000 words per day written.

1K a Day Motivational – “But I’m Working Late”

Thirteenth in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.

“I’m working late tonight.” That’s a phrase you probably find yourself uttering sometimes. It is an evil phrase. Maleficent says it just to make her lackeys shiver. Satan built Hell on the backs of overtime. This was me several days last week and this week so far. My real job is a Project Manager for an archival and data entry center. There are busy times of year and Spring is almost always one of our busier times. So what do I do? Continue reading

1K a Day Challenge – Week Thirteen

It’s April 5th, 2015. Week thirteen of writing 1,000 words per day of fiction.

For some, April is the month of Camp NaNo! I’m joining some of those people in writing sprints this month to not only help myself keep the 1K train rolling, but also to help those people stay motivated by having a writing partner! It’s time for the Week Thirteen update on my 1K a Day Challenge!

Days 88 through 94 have been successes, with a minimum of 1,000 words per day written.

1K a Day Motivational – “But Nature Hates Me”

Twelfth in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.

Last Wednesday another string of tornadoes blew through Oklahoma, and more specifically, Moore, OK just south of Oklahoma City, apparently the worldwide epicenter for tornadic activity. If this was Ghostbusters, Moore is the apartment building where all ghost activity is converging, or Spook Central. Continue reading

1K a Day Challenge – Week Twelve

It’s March 29th, 2015. Week Twelve of writing 1,000 words per day of fiction. I am thoroughly insane at this point, but it’s time for the Week Twelve update on my 1K a Day Challenge!

It’s the last week of March so it’s time for the next Inspiration post!

A friend and I were discussing old favorite anime series this past week, and he brought up several shows that I had managed not to watch yet, among those: Aku no Hana, or Flowers of Evil. Hear the complete ending theme (ED to those in the know). Continue reading

1K a Day – “But I Lost The Thread”

Tenth in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.

I’m at the middle point of my work in progress, right at the 50% mark of what I think it will take to complete this novel (Gridfall). There comes a moment in the writing, especially longer writing, when I start to question every other word I put down. Because I’m a discovery writer more than an architect writer, the concept I had of the story has changed drastically from where I started. I get ideas for an edgy or unexpected direction a character is going to take and I just plunge headfirst into it and let the plot adjust from there.  Continue reading
