1K a Day Motivational – “It Inspires Me” November

It’s the last Thursday of November and that means I get to write a review and pass it off as a Motivational blog post!

I have been reading the Robot Trilogy by Isaac Asimov this month, and it’s been a lot of fun to visit science fiction that influenced so damned much in its genre and just about everywhere else. The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, and The Robots of Dawn are books I had actually not read yet because I’m a terrible genre reader despite writing science fiction a fair amount. Continue reading

1K a Day Motivational – “It Inspires Me” September

It’s the last week of September and this is the unbiased best month of the year! I use the last motivational post of the month to talk about and somewhat review a piece of media that has touched me and inspired me in some way. I’ve talked about movies, TV shows, books, and anime. I thought maybe I’d go a little outside the usual fare and into comic book land.

I have never been a big comics reader, mostly because comics have a way of being ridiculous and bad, especially the perpetually ongoing superhero series that are still in abundance to this day.

But there are gems out there, special comics that I have read over the years that are transcendent of the medium. I’m going to talk about Alias today, which is maybe jumping the gun just a little bit since the Netflix TV show centered around Jessica Jones isn’t coming out until November.

1K a Day Motivational – “It Inspires Me” August

It’s the last week of August and that means I’m talking about something that inspired the unholy bejesus out of me!

There’s a movie that came out a little while back (2012 to be precise), and you can see the trailer for that movie right here!

Although you probably shouldn’t. The trailer is pretty bad. Which, now that I’m thinking about it, is why I said OH HELL NO to this movie when it was first coming out.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (referred to as simply Seeking from here on out) is an apocalyptic romantic comedy, and that’s a weird damned combination, let me tell you. Continue reading

1K a Day Motivational – “It Inspires Me” July

It’s the last week of July and that means I get to write a review and pretend it’s part of my weekly series!

I was gonna talk about Sense8, the wonderful new show on Netflix, but I talked about a Netflix show last month, so we’re going into read’em material again instead.

So over the last couple months I’ve been reading this fantasy series, two books, by Karen Miller, the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker Saga. The books are called The Innocent Mage and The Awakened Mage. I finished Awakened Mage towards the end of June, but I’ve been ruminating on it for a good long while, considering it, and I want to now talk about it a bit and explain why it inspires me even though it wasn’t one of my favorite things this month. 1K a Day Motivational – “It Inspires Me” May Edition

Twentieth in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.

It’s the last week of May so it’s time for the next Inspiration post!

Let’s talk about Brandon Sanderson, shall we? That most prolific of fantasy authors, that speed-demon famous for Mistborn, Wheel of Time, Steelheart, The Stormlight Archives, and more.

He of the googolplex of words published every year. Continue reading

1K a Day Motivational – Discipline Versus Inspiration

Seventeenth in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day. Or just rant, as I’m going to do today.

I do a lot of talking in these Motivationals that’s negative. Perhaps that’s a good focus, since most people I talk to about writing who are in the early stages of learning the craft are often looking for the negative stuff. They don’t need the “here’s what helped me and motivated me” but “here’s how I got over the block”. And that’s fine. It’s very hard to move beyond the initial excitement of starting a new project, or a new challenge, until you’ve done it a couple times.

And then it’s still difficult as hell. Every story of sufficient length I’ve written has hit those middle doldrums. That point wherein I look at what I’ve done and say “what am I doing?” Continue reading

1K a Day Motivational – “It Inspires Me” April Edition

Sixteenth in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.

It’s the last week of April so it’s time for the next Inspiration post!

Give this crazy train a watch. I’ll wait.

So now then. Are you confused? Continue reading

1K a Day – “It Inspires Me” March Edition

Eleventh in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.

It’s the last week of March so it’s time for the next Inspiration post!

A friend and I were discussing old favorite anime series this past week, and he brought up several shows that I had managed not to watch yet, among those: Aku no Hana, or Flowers of Evil. Hear the complete ending theme (ED to those in the know). Continue reading

1K a Day – “It Inspires Me”

Seventh in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.

This past week I was working through some bad days at work, just in general feeling a little bit nonplussed about writing or creation in general. I’ve been spending so much more time writing this year on account of the challenge that I’ve been giving less time to the inspirational pursuits of reading, watching movies and TV, playing video games, and the like. By the weekend I had begun to feel particularly drained of inspiration, which is to say I wanted to stop writing.
