Thirty second in the Motivational series, and tied directly to the previous week’s “But I’m on Vacation”.
My vacation ended a couple days ago, and the last day of my vacation turned out to be lots of travel and an attempt to return to the normal routines of life. Only problem is, normal routines had fallen by the wayside. What’s a sleep schedule? What’s work? Why do I need to do that? Laundry? Chores?
Fuck all that. Continue reading
It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for another of those fun Motivationals where I try to work out one of a thousand things that is distracting me from the writing process.
This week I’m on vacation, away from home, out of state, visiting family and doing fun things! But I’m also still writing, still editing, still trying to do crits for people.
I’ve touched on this before a bit in my post “But It’s a Holiday” and I’d like to just expand on that now that I’m actually on a vacation where I’m not only away from my comfortable writing zones but in an entirely new place, away from the stresses of work (mostly), and can enjoy myself carefree for a while.
I’m somewhere absurdly high over my 1k minimum per day goal of writing for the year. This is the 217th day and I have yet to miss any days. Part of me is completely ecstatic at this, and another part of me just wants to put the fingers away and stop thinking about writing.
But I haven’t done that yet. It’s Wednesday, my vacation is half over, and I’m still dragging out the laptop once a day to get my writing in. Whether it’s during a lull in the day between activities, or early in the morning or late at night while my hosts are asleep, I’m still writing. Continue reading
A departure from the regular schedule of two posts a week related to my 1K Challenge, I bring you a fast and dirty essay in response to a prompt from Chuck Wendig over on his blog.
Why do I write?
It’s not a question I think about often, but I do get asked it on occasion. I’ve written about reasons why I write in the past and I have no intention of dredging them up again.
I could give you all the canned answers, and they’d all be true. I write for many reasons. Continue reading
Fifth in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.
This one’s gonna get angry. Strap in.
Some days are more draining than others. Some sap you mentally, or physically. You’re too tired or brain is too fried. Happens all the time, to everyone. Too mentally tired happens to me multiple times a week. But I’ve already talked about being too tired. Continue reading
Fourth in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.
I have a history of playing massively multiplayer online games (MMOs). These are often just Skinner Boxes designed to dole out rewards in an addictive manner, and they’re incredibly effective when it’s hidden well. In my 20s I got sucked into World of Warcraft with a group of friends and played it on and off, with varying degrees of intensity, for six years. I’m not especially proud of that, but it is the truth. When I get deep into an MMO, all creative productivity goes by the wayside. Social life begins to wane if it has no bearing on the game. I’d exist on three hours of sleep so I could play longer and still keep my job. Most people have addictive personalities and I’m no different. Continue reading
Third in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day, or possibly talk about something that provided support to get me through the day.
This week I’m going to talk about my writing friends, Robert and Kyra. You see, I’m not on my journey alone. The two of them are fellow writers, aspiring authors with the same need to tell stories. They are my hype crew, my cheerleaders, my co-conspirators. And I am all of those things to them! Continue reading
Second in the 1K a Day Motivational Series, in which I talk about something that happened in the previous week that could have or did prevent me from writing a minimum of 1,000 words on a given day.
This past week, I came down with what I have to assume was the Hantavirus. The flu-like symptoms started last Wednesday during the workday with general fever, myalgia, fatigue, and an inability to focus. By Thursday afternoon I was ready to go curl up in a ball and never move again, and by Friday morning it hurt just to breathe. As I was contemplating the possibility of a doctor’s visit, I spent a lot of time resting and not very much time doing anything else. I left work early on Thursday and didn’t go in at all on Friday, but those things did not lead to greater productivity as regards my publishing as I spent all that time in bed being miserable and hating life. And possibly rats. Continue reading
For those of you familiar with my 1K a Day challenge for the year of 2015, I present to you a weekly series. Once a week I will endeavor to write a nice, short blog post with something that occurred that week that attempted (or possibly even succeeded in) tripping me up and causing a failure. This could be poor time management on my part, getting pulled over by a cop who was stung by a bunch of angry bees and he just wanted to beat someone, House of Cards Season 3 being released (this one worries me), or perhaps an invasion of ultra-intelligent mice intent on global cheese supremacy.
Regardless, I feel certain that every week, I’ll do something or something will happen that will needlessly complicate my 1K a Day Challenge, and the point of this series is to talk about the variety of ways in which routine can be broken, how to combat it, and how to weather a social life while still working a full-time job and keeping your hobby moving every single day. Where do you like to write? At your home office looking out a big bay window on the sand and surf? Curled up on the couch with a blanket and your laptop, sipping a hot cup of tea? At the library using public computers in near tomblike silence? At a coffee shop with your tablet, a cappafrappalatteccino and your headphones? Continue reading
