Total count for the year thus far is 348,788 words. Average daily word count is 1,263 words. WIP Savage Duty is at 13,618 words. Based on 120,000 words estimated for expected completion, it is 11.3% complete.
Savage Duty is coming right along. Being that it’s the third book in a series, and the conclusion to a trilogy of stories, some things come easier than when I’m working on a single standalone story, while other things are much more difficult. Managing the large cast of characters in the Shades of the Past series is difficult, but I have four main characters, another half a dozen secondary characters that may get narrative chapters, and a slew of background and minor characters, most of whom I don’t even need to reference in the story.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t need to know who they are. What they’re doing. I’m establishing a greater world that I’ll be exploring down the line, so a lot of these people need to exist at least in my head for future books.
The stuff that comes easy is that I know these characters. Two of them have been with me for two novels, and the rest have been around for one novel so far. I don’t have to spend a lot of time character-building. Locations are known. Now it’s just plotting, getting the characters right within their respective stories. Telling an interesting tale with characters that I can push forward instead of just watching them be who they were forever. I’m excited to have a large cast of characters to play with, and I know that when I finish the story I’ll be sad to part with them all.
The shapeshifter story, The Shape of Family, is entering its end-game. Expect a good mix of excitement and drama in the next couple weekly entries in this serial story, and then the finale will come, closing out what has been a really fun little story for me to tell. Sadie Shadowdancer, the Bandersnatch, and the Winged Riders were well-formed in my head almost from the moment I started writing, and I’m glad they are resonating with people.
Until next week, speedy fingers and pleasant dreams!
And remember, writing is a skill. So write the hell on, writers.
